490. Omens

I’ve left the entrails in the chicken, and instead refer to history for some omens that are good or bad for the Wallabies and All Blacks.

  • ‘No team has won back-to-back tournaments’.

Australia +  New Zealand

  • ‘The team that knocks out the reigning champion goes on to win the tournament.

This has been true for every tournament except 1995 and 2011.

Australia +  New Zealand

  • The winner of that year’s Tri-Nations (Rugby Championship) will not win the World Cup.’

Australia   New Zealand +

  • The champion will go through unbeaten’.

Australia + New Zealand +

  • ‘The winner will have exited the previous Cup in the Quarter-Finals’.

Australia  New Zealand

Although you could argue that Australia’s 2011 semi-final exit gives them the edge.

  • ‘A final played at Twickenham will be won by Australia’.

Australia +  New Zealand

  • ‘New Zealand does not win a tournament overseas’.

Australia +  New Zealand

What does all that add up to? Well, anxious, obviously.

More than that, it describes the mountain that Shag & Co set out to climb four years ago. The peak is within sight, but history is agin them. It would be a monumental achievement to lift the trophy on Sunday morning after being the best team in the world in the intervening period. Monumental very nearly to the point of impossible.

And this Wallabies team will not let it happen easily. They have climbed a huge part of that mountain themselves after changing coaches just one year ago. They will not want to be beaten to the summit.

Some new history will be created this weekend, and old omens broken.

Game on.

About Ned Davy

By hokey, the big fella’s tipped into his 50s. A rangy loose forward in his prime, good with the ball in hand, but rarely up with the play any more.
