England 60 – 3 Uruguay
At least there was a big crowd in Manchester for England’s farewell to the Cup. Not full by any means, but biggish.
That might, or might not, be because the tickets were supposedly changing hands for as little as £2.50. Or it might be because the English fans anticipated an opportunity to see what England might have been. Running and scoring tries, for example. And there was enough of that, although not as much as you might expect given how weak Uruguay are.
The problem for this match as a spectacle, of course, was that nothing hung on the outcome. It was almost as bad as the bronze medal playoff.
At least Nick Easter had a decent send-off, scoring a hat-trick at the age of 37. Not quite giving Ned hope for a late call-up, but nice to see some grey hair on the track.
