446. From The Couch: Match #20

Namibia 21 – 35 Tonga

Good game. Great game.Watch the tape.

Eight tries in all, five to Tonga and three to Namibia.

Full of running, endeavour, attacking, verve. Played by both sides in a great spirit of fierce but fair.

These games between the qualifiers are the real joy of a World Cup. When else are Namibia going to play Tonga, except in a Cup? They may not either be real contenders to go through to the quarter-finals, but their love for showing off their skills, and just the joy of running and carrying and competing, shines through.

Tonga had a point to prove after their first up loss to Georgia, and their scrum completely dominated. Namibia showed that their ‘moderate’ loss to the All Blacks was no fluke. They are massively improved from earlier Cups, and now within striking distance of taking a win or two.

This match marked the halfway point in the Pools. Every team has played two games, and has two to come. The shape of it is shaking out in Pools C and D, while Pools A and B will not be resolved until the final weekend.

Yummy yummy.

About Ned Davy

By hokey, the big fella’s tipped into his 50s. A rangy loose forward in his prime, good with the ball in hand, but rarely up with the play any more.
