435. From The Motel: Match #11

France 40 – 8 Romania

The television view of the French dressing room at halftime showed coach Philippe Saint-Andre doing a haka.

Well, it looked like a haka.  There was foot stamping and arm thumping and facial grimaces and, although there was no audio, you could sense he was talking about life and death.

France were unconvincing leaders at 17-6 at that point, including two tries scored when the Romans had a man in the bin. They slightly improved their convincement quotient during the second half with three tries and the bonus point, but only slightly. There was a lot of bumbling and fumbling and, in truth, the Romanians were honest grafters, but not much more.

Remember: this is France. What happens in the Pool, stays in the Pool. It signifies nothing about what might or might not happen later.

About Ned Davy

By hokey, the big fella’s tipped into his 50s. A rangy loose forward in his prime, good with the ball in hand, but rarely up with the play any more.
