Wales 54 – 9 Uruguay
Wales will be satisfied enough to come through their first match with a bonus point and no major injuries.
But only enough, because there were long periods when they muddled through against the tournament’s last qualifiers. In fact, they were 0-6 down to two penalties, before they settled and got up the other end. And there were plenty of fumbled balls and unclear running lines the whole match long.
But Uruguay deserves the credit for competing enough to confuse. There was a big difference in skill but not commitment.
Not a great match for a neutral watching from the far side of the world. For the South Americans the great satisfaction is just being on the stage. For the Boyos from the Valleys the only satisfaction will be getting started and avoiding the banana skin: they’ll know they need a massively improved effort against England and Australia if they’re going to advance.
Beard of the Year award goes to Welsh lock Jake Ball (aka Jake Ballsack), who looks like an extra from Monty Python and The Holy Grail. Superb.
