390. The Wallabies Squad for RWC2015

Michael Cheika has named his squad for the World Cup.

Blimey. What a schemozzle, I reckon.

For a start, he’s gone for a 17 forwards/14 backs split. There’s an argument about 17/14 versus 18/13, but the noggin scratcher is the make-up within.

  • 2 hookers.
  • 5 props, one of them uncapped.
  • 2 half backs.
  • 2 first five-eighths.

All of that penny-pinching in specialist positions is so that he can carry 7 outside backs and 6 loose forwards.

Now, maybe he’s picking on form. You know, just the 31 players who can run and pass and catch all at the same time. Which just screams lack of depth in Aussie rugby.

Or maybe he really does believe that neither of his hookers and neither of his halfbacks are going to pick up a niggle.

And sure, if either of his first-fives goes troppo, he can slip in Toomua or even Giteau, and they’ll probably do a better job than either Cooper or Foley.  Refer to comment above about depth.

But then add the kicker. Stephen Moore is captain, and there are two vice-captains: Adam Ashley-Cooper (good) and Michael Hooper (dumb).

David Pocock is the better player and the better leader, but he doesn’t play for Cheika at the Warratahs.

Here’s my take: Cheika thinks that he is a force of nature. That he can declare x, and that x will therefore be true.

Good luck with that chummy.

About Ned Davy

By hokey, the big fella’s tipped into his 50s. A rangy loose forward in his prime, good with the ball in hand, but rarely up with the play any more.

  1. Cpt. Tinarse says:

Amazing he picked fragile Quade, and lazy Palu. And reckless to only have 2 hookers, lineouts being so critical to a strong set piece and to defend a tactical kicking game from the opposition. It says a lot that Genia is required, despite age and injury prone. White will need to keep fit and his passport ready. They may not even make it out of the pool. So, a wonderful selection for us. Are you going to have a go at predicting Shag’s squad?

    • Ned Davy says:

Agree to all. Am thinking about whether I do a “predict Shag” compared to a “Ned’s pick”. But I don’t want to get on the wrong side of Shag, because then he might not pick me.

  2. Cpt. Tinarse says:

Do a Ned’s pick. We want more rugby and less whining about food. 😉
