359. Saturday Matinee

The great Schalk Burger captains the Springboks against the All Blacks tomorrow morning. The first clip is a profile from early 2014 in which he talks about the serious health issues he’s overcome.

The second clip showcases some of his talent. He is, of course, ferociously strong in the carry and tackle, but what stands out for me is the lines he runs. He exemplifies John Eales’ dictum that, on the rugby field, you are either being useful or useless. Burger is always useful.

About Ned Davy

By hokey, the big fella’s tipped into his 50s. A rangy loose forward in his prime, good with the ball in hand, but rarely up with the play any more.
